Building the next generation of community leaders
Philly S.A.F.E. was created for young African American boys living in Philadelphia. We recognize that today's young people need more than a classroom — they need real skills, real mentors, and a community that believes in them. Through hands-on programming and consistent relationships, we help youth find their path.
Young Black men in West Philadelphia are navigating real danger — Penn researchers found that 1 in 8 Black teenage boys in Philadelphia will be shot or killed before age 25. When young people in West Philadelphia were asked what they believed was fueling the rise in gun violence, the answer was consistent: a lack of mentorship and nowhere safe to go. And the path forward — entrepreneurship, financial independence, building something of their own — is blocked by a gap that starts early: 82% of Black young adults interested in starting a business don't have basic financial literacy.
Every week, we show up — with mentors, with programming, with a community that sees these young men and invests in what they can become.
What We Teach
Four pillars. One mission.
Service
Through community service initiatives, youth engage in neighborhood projects and events that foster a sense of unity, responsibility, and empathy. Service isn't just what we do — it's who we become.
Agriculture
We educate youth about agriculture, encouraging them to cultivate gardens and learn sustainable farming practices. Growing food is a gateway to self-sufficiency, science, and community stewardship.
Financial Literacy
Participants learn the tools needed for financial independence — budgeting, saving, and investing. We believe every young person deserves to understand how money works and how to make it work for them.
Entrepreneurship
The program nurtures entrepreneurial spirit, offering mentorship and resources for young people to develop their own ventures. We teach that the goal isn't just to get a job — it's to create opportunity.
